Viral Twin Talking Babies

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Twin brothers Sam and Ren have taken YouTube by storm in the latest viral video. The toddlers appear to be conducting a debate, all in baby babble. The boys respond to each other with hand gestures, head nodding and bursts of laughter.

The twins and their parents have been making the rounds of talk shows, and ABC News provided some background on the phenomena. Approximately 40% of twins communicate through what seems to be a private language, though children this young are actually imitating the sounds and gestures they see their parents making rather than imparting meaning to each other. They’re showing that they know how conversations work – now they just need to learn how to talk.

Enjoy the talking babies in their YouTube video.

Bringing Home a Second Baby

Monday, March 14th, 2011

The birth of a second child is an exciting time for parents, but it may be a stressful time for your older child.  It’s important to help your older child understand what is happening to your family.   Here are some tips to help make the birth of a second child go as smoothly as possible.

  • When you bring home your new baby, don’t be surprised if your older child reverts to some younger behaviors.  Be patient and this phase should pass.

  • Try to carve out some time to spend along with your older child.  He or she used to have your full attention and needs to be shown that you haven’t forgotten.

  • Watch out for sibling rivalry, especially if you older child is a toddler.  Never leave a newborn alone with a younger child.

  • You’ll have your hands full with two children, so make sure you eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep both before and after the birth.

When to Break the Binky Habit

    Monday, March 07th, 2011

Many parents introduce a “binky” (or pacifier) as a way to satisify their baby’s urge to suck.  There is also some evidence that a binky will reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SID).  However, unless a baby is weaned away from the binky by the time he or she is walking and talking, it can limit speech development and the ability to interact with others.  It can also lead to infections of the middle ear.

Experts recommend breaking the binky habit when a baby is between 1 and 2 years old.  Waiting any longer can turn it into a habit that’s very hard to break.  For more information about the use of baby pacifiers, see What You Should Know About Pacifiers on Parents.com.  If breaking the binky habit has become a problem around your house, read this Time article about the Binky Fairy.
