Children and Bicycle Safety

Watching the next generation of children in my neighborhood, it seems that bike riding is as popular as ever and that many children are learning to ride at a much younger age.  It’s not uncommon to see a three year old pedaling down the street.  As soon as a child is old enough to ride (even with training wheels or on a tricycle), it’s time to being emphasizing bicycle safety.  Here are some guidelines:

  • Children should always ride single file on the sidewalk and street.  Riding side by side can cause cars and pedestrians to swerve and may also result in an accident when riders crash into each other.

  • When passing someone on a bike (whether it’s another rider or a pedestrian), always let them know you’re behind them.  Someone who’s startled may move in unexpected ways.

  • Only one child should be on a bicycle at a time.  Riding double invites accidents.

  • Most importantly, always wear a bike helmet.  In many areas there are laws requiring children to wear helmets.  Even if that’s not the case in your area, make it a family rule.
