Tips for Making Safe Parenting Decisions

Danger

June is National Safety Month and there is lots of media focus on keeping children and families safe. The past few years have seen lots of warning for parents about lead paint, children’s medicines, unsafe toys and product recalls. There seems to be a lot more to worry about these days, or maybe the media just makes it seem that way.

The Positive Parenting Solutions website lists these tips for parents who are feeling overwhelmed by the bad news and warnings.

  • Get the Facts. Don’t base safety decisions on rumors. Do research to find out the facts about safety issues.

  • Use Credible Sources. You can’t believe everything you read on the Internet. Make sure your facts are coming from an unbiased, credible source.

  • Take Your Questions to an Expert. Don’t make decisions based on hearsay. When in doubt about health issues or medicines, consult your pediatrician. Contact products manufacturers or government agencies to get the facts about product recalls.
